FUTURE CITIES Wellington
What does it mean for a city to dream?
Born in the megacity of Tokyo, Future Cities is a new kind of shared experience that uses light and sound projections to explore the world.
Brought to us by Derive, a Tokyo based collective, this Wellington edition of Future Cities will transform the Hall of Memories, taking you on a conceptual journey from forgotten forests to impossible cityscapes, combining memories of the past and the future.
Future Cities is led by the powerful digital visuals of Cody Ellingham (NZ / Japan) and Ruben Fro (Italy); and accompanied by a moving soundscape of epic proportions created live by SJF (UK).
June 16, 19:30 - 20:30
National War Memorial, Taranaki St, Mount Cook, Wellington
A GROUND-BREAKING INTERACTIVE MEDIUM
FUTURE CITIES is a ground-breaking immersive art medium that combines the power of 3D photogrammetry with interactive experiences.
The technology behind FUTURE CITIES was developed by the DERIVE team in 2018 to enable us to quickly capture immersive and stunning 3D environments and to turn them into visual journeys and interactive experiences.
Wandering the past and Future of the world’s Cities
What is Future Cities?
'Future Cities' was a project born in Tokyo in 2018 with the idea of exploring the shared memories of the world's cities. The team including Photographer Cody Ellingham, 3D creator Ruben Fro, and soundscape artist SJF wander and scan places using a process called photogrammetry, turning images and video into ‘point clouds’.
Each place is uniquely scanned to tell its story and then the 'point clouds' are assembled together to create a dreamlike interactive experience that is projected onto buildings or in gallery spaces. “It is as if you are swimming through a dream of a place deep underwater,” Cody describes, “some of these buildings are already gone and they only exist in memories now.” The real-time aspects of the show combined with the immersive music creates a powerful experience that leaves audiences mesmerized.
“The work has been incredibly well received, we have had people staying for hours at our shows exploring this world we have created. By combining dreams of places and memories we give a glimpse of their city as they have never seen it before.”
The latest edition of Future Cities is coming to New Zealand to transform the Hall of Memories at the National War Memorial in Wellington, taking you on a conceptual journey from forgotten forests to impossible cityscapes, combining memories of the past and the future through 3D photogrammetry and immersive audio.
This is a one-hour seated event where the creators of Future Cities will guide you through their imaginings of New Zealand. Suitable for most ages, tickets are strictly limited so please register at https://www.loemis.nz/future-cities
